It was crowded, hot and kind of smelly the day I went to Portobello Road Market but somehow I still loved every minute of it. Walking down the famous market you encounter food stands, clothes stands, souvenir stands, many tourists but also quite a few locals filling the skinny, two mile long street.
The area is quaint and has a lot of character as shown through the homes and buildings that line the streets. The homes are in numerous bright colors, including orange, purple, and blue and somehow it is not the least bit tacky as purple houses might be in the states. The brightly colored homes match the attitudes of the people on the street of Portobello Road in the area known as Notting Hill.
Notting Hill was made even more famous in the 90's by American, Julia Roberts. Roberts starred with Hugh Grant in "Notting Hill". Grant, in the movie had a bright blue door on the famous Portobello Road.
Walking through the street people also played music and sang and my group actually stopped and talked with one upcoming artist, Robbie Boyd, who said he played in the Notting Hill area every Saturday. We even made time to go back and see him play once more in the area.
Portobello Road Market is an experience that is definitely worth while, while in London.
